This year I decided to abandon petunias and bergonias. Instead I planted masses of deliciously fragrant herbs in pots, rockeries and borders. Among them are lavenders, thymes, marjoram, mints, purple sage, chives, rosemary and fennel. Not only can I use them in cooking, but their contrasting colours and stems create a cottage garden randomness rather than the regimentation border plants suggest. They are in full bloom attracting a multitude of busy bees. Fill your boots little ones.
