Pancake Race-a little bit of history
Olney in Buckinghamshire claims to be the place where pancake racing began. In 1445 the Shriving service was the time when sins were forgiven before Lent so attendance was considered compulsory by both peasants and rulers. One woman, whilst cooking, lost track of time, heard the shriving bell so ran to church in her apron still clutching a frying pan. Hundreds of years later this event is still commemorated with a women only pancake race from the inn to the Church.
